Valeo September Top 10

Back again with a new top 10. I guess you can tell what are my obsessions lately by this tracklist. It's pretty much a lot of UK Funky / Tropicalish 130 bpm stuff (Kyla, Man&Man, Dj Massacre, Sam Tiba, Silverlink). Expect some mixes coming up, je me sors les doigts du cul.

There's a few notable exceptions though, being Cumbia Villera treatement of Major Lazer's Hold The Line by Frikstailers and, to keep it in Argentina, Dancehall fire by one of my favorite female MC: Princesa. Also, I'm loving this collaboration between DuttyArtz's Geko Jones and the always excellent Uproot Andy. A more recent discovery is one of Necessary Mayhem latest production the excellent Joker Smoker Riddim. On the disco dub side, Terje's great remix of Paul Simon hooked me yesterday night during a CFCF mix (shout out to Seb Diamond who also pointed me into Terje's direction a little while ago). I hope you enjoy the selection. Drop some love in the comment section and add me on myspace if you do.

Silverlink - The Message Is Love (L-Vis 1990 remix)
Kyla - Daydreaming (Lil Silva Remix)
Man&Man - Le Cabaret Hologramme (Lazy Flow Remix - Poirier Edit)
Dj Massacre - Tarolas
Sam Tiba - Barbie Weed
Paul Simon - Diamonds (Todd Terje Tangoterje Dub Remix)

Necessary Mayhem ft YT, Ziggi, Mr Williams - Joker Smoker Riddim
Uproot Andy & Geko Jones - Manuelita remix
Major Lazer - Hold The Line (Frikstailers Remix)

Kuduro: 10 essential tracks

As Buraka Som Sistema is rolling into town this thursday, The Montreal Mirror and Erin Macleod asked us to put some music together for their readers in order to present this music called Kuduro. We've been posting about kuduro for almost three years here on Masala, and The Month of Kuduro (Feb 2007, 1, 2, 3, 4) is still a good way to discover different aspects of this music. I also wrote an entry a year later that got some interesting answers (here and here).

In the last few months Kuduro exploded in France as the flavor of the day. Several compilations got released by major label and independant label, trying to get some of that money that young french from 2nd or 3rd immigration generation would like to spend on the new music trend. Greg Scruggs of Beat Diaspora has some interesting information and thoughts about the imagery and the marketing of Kuduro on his blog, including an advertisement game with Costuleta as a character.

This is 10 tracks that Jean-Phillipe and myself (Guillaume) think could be essential if you want to discover Kuduro in a pretty large acceptance. Most of these tracks are downloadable at a 320k bitrate but we tried to put links to website where you can actually buy the music. If you're one of the artist, or a music label who represents these artist, and want this songs to be taken down, we will gladly do it, just email us (emails in the right column).

Costuleta
1. Dança do Tchiriri - DJ Znobia / Costuleta / Magnesio (download)

THE biggest track of the genre. It has been an earworm success all around the planet for almost 3 years now. It’s pretty unclear who created it but apparently it’s DJ Znobia and it got release by Costuleta under his name. Buy here.
Achetez-ici

2. Noite e Dia - Tira Makossa (download)

One of the best female MC of Kuduro, this track is also important as it’s been one of the first song to be largely spread around the blogosphere in 2006.

Puto Prata
3. Puto Prata - Zuata Zuata (download)

Puto Prata is definitely Masala’s favorite kuduro artist. Incredible energy in the flow supported by always great production. Kid is a genius, he was using auto-tune back in 2005!

Dog Murras
4. Dog Murras – Midexa (download)

One of the biggest music star in Angola and of course he covers a whole range of music, but his voice makes his kuduro tracks automatic bombs!Website.
Site web.

5. Helder Rei Do Kuduro - Festa de Paz (download)

Helder is a pop star. He’s very famous in Portugal, not appreciated by everyone but this kuduro track is a classic.

6. Buraka Som Sistema - Yah!
I'm not posting that song as the label(or maybe the management, or maybe the band?) seems to ask blogger to take down every single post with BSS original material. And Blogger/google doesn't ask you nicely to remove one file, it just erases the whole post. Some writers are leaving google because of that. You can find the song here though. Here's the video:

This track put Buraka Som Sistema on the map. It sets the tone of their personal and more western audience friendly approach of Kuduro with a tempo at 130 beat per minute(house’s standard) against Kuduro’s usual 140bpm. Go check out Sinden’s remix as well with big bassline. Buy here.
Achetez ici.

7. Frederic Galliano ft Pai Diesel – Até Quando (download)

France’s Galliano is the other very important figure in terms of popularization of Kuduro outside the portuguese speaking world. His Kuduro Sound System is the first Kuduro cd to be easily accessible to westerners. Buy here. Kuduro Sound System's myspace.

8. Izé - Tronku Di Mundo (download)

The Cap Verdien community has been making their own version of Kuduro bringing it closer to their carnaval music called Funana. It’s been mainly done in Paris, France, and it’s a very interesting appropriation process where this two lusophone communities now debate about what the real thing is. Buy here.

9. Familia Agre - Sai De Caminho (download)

This a pretty special track Guillaume got off of a kuduro compilation bought in France called Vozes Do Musseque. It bridges kuduro with more traditional chants. Buy here.

10. Denon Squad - Oba (download)

Very fast and violent kuduro ! Based in Lisbon, Os Denon Squad is the the first band of Engrácia Silva (Pongo Love), featured on Buraka's "Wegue Wegue" as you can read here. Check her myspace.

News from MTL

Homie Hovatron has a new song up for download.

Read that article about Globalistas by David Dacks in Exclaim! Magazine

Hey anglos, read an interview with Fred. Galliano about Kuduro, translated by the good old Google Translator here.

Ghislain Poirier has a new and awesome video for the single of his latest EP:

Frikstailers Duo would like to speak portuguese

I mean it's obvious this guys from Cordoba, Argentina, want to speak Portuguese. After a glitchy reinterpretation of Baile Funk with Baile Frik, Rafael sent me that un-released track telling me "I think this is the way we´d make music if we where born in Angola.. this would be kuduro según Frikstailers.=D"

Direct download: Frikstailers - Ta Duro Kuduro / Zshare

Great track indeed, which is also telling us that not only white middle class kids from North America and Europe are interested in this "other"(geographical, race, class) music and doing things with it (in this case producing new music, elsewhere, like here at Masala, presenting it, talking about it and simply feeling it). In this times when we're urged of getting involved if we're "engaging" in "other" people music, what is the place for fun, irony and creativity? I think this things created an interesting result with Frikstailers's Ta Duro Kuduro.

Dalston Shopper from the Dalston Oxfam Shop blog have been very nice to Masala one year ago saying we were THE HOTTEST MUSIC ON THE NET ! Well this is payback time ! Here's a mix of african stuff Dalston did for the Diesel U Music radio. A Statement About Kuduro: An Angolan Point of View

Earlier today, Toke posted that comment on my post "Kuduro - One Year Later". I thought it's important enough that we'll put it back as a post, and not let it getting buried in a few month old comment section. Toke is talking about many issues that I pointed out in my post. And I'm really glad to hear that Kuduro is still big in Luanda and that scene is slowly shaping up. Toke, I'm also wondering why Cape Verdian is a joke to Angolan? Why Helder is a thief and if your opinion on Frédéric Galliano's work is also the same on a band like Buraka Som Sistema (see latest video).

Many thanks to Toke for his input, please visit his blog

Subject: [MASALA] Nouveau commentaire sur Kuduro - One Year Later (kuduro series).
Toke a ajouté un nouveau commentaire sur votre message blog "Kuduro - One Year Later (kuduro series)" :

Hello there,
my name is Toke, I live in Angola, Luanda, where I've been borned.

I've comed here through Likembe blog link.

I'm a adio producer, speaker, and dj everywhere through Luanda's nights.

http://kuduro.podomatic.com
(strait from cd-r street kuduro sellers to your hard drive, the angolan guetho musicians that have no commercial contract but that everybody is listening in the partys, taxis, bus, or in the street - kuduro rulles in luanda's caotic automobile trafic) - Site rebuilding.
I'm a big kuduro collector and I'ved a kuduro site that have been damaged by the server and that I'm rebuilding (slowly as my 256kbps connection allows).
http://kuduro.podomatic.com/

Being kuduro born in Luanda in the early 90's, and in the middle of the heaviest african civil war that will end only in 2002, it was very hard to produce and present kuduro records and live shows until six years ago.

The things are changing for best, now days, but what is really happening is that only a few of angolans kuduro entertainners have a professional record contract and some international projection.

By the other way, angolans still remains crazy by kuduro scene and dance, and all over Luanda city, cd-rs are popuping from the big guethos youth, whom are in a prolific way recording studio demos, or home demos, that sometimes become huge national hits.

But, as the majority of those local artists do not have any contract, they do not have structure to expand they work world wide.

Anyway, this artists only profits come from local live shows that unespected succes provides, and by hand to hand selling of cd-rs, once that they are ripped off by angolan radios that do not pay any incoming; by local djs who grew a international fame without any credits to the real authors of the beats; and by europeans and non europeans djs, as we all know, due to the lake of information and blabla... at the same time taking avantage and promoting guetho angolan kids. That's great! view the state of things.

Proudly and warrior angolan kuduro moovement do not considere Lisbon kuduro, as Helder Rei do kuduro, as other thing than pure robery.

We, angolans indulgently laught if someone speaks about cap verdian kuduro!

"Galliano kuduro" (lol) - it has the merit of promote the angolan style, with some deviances, and non kuduro beats, but it's a great job. It 's a great job for him too, not only for the angolan music that he use at a "no price".

There is only one kuduro beat and moovement, and it is Luanda's almost five millions habitants that mark that beat with an incredible fast and caotic car trafic, popping kuduro all over the town, all over the day with the naif smile of guetho childrens.

Today, angolan guetho kuduro moovement is strong in Luanda, and more and more youngs achieve a minimal record contract.

By the stylistic point of view, now days guetho kuduro it's going more mczided than the old kuduro, whom where more instrumental than spoked.

Mainstream angolan kuduro artist as Dog Murras, Sebém, Puto Prata and others have allready notest that word spoked inflection.

Thank you for your time and excuses for the lenght of the explanation in these non corrected almost english words.

Anyway, for me it's amazing and very interesting to read your opinions and reflections about this style of music from my homeland!

All the best to you,
hope everything's going right.

Kuduro - One Year Later (kuduro series)

Last year quite around this period of time Kuduro popped up in the hipster blogosphere and took over it in a quite impressive whirlwind manner. Everybody got really excited by both the Buraka Som Sistema EP (released in July 2006) and Frederic Galiano's project. The tracks posted by Fat Planet on October 27th started the thing, alongside that post, dated a month before, and both have been quite a reference as you can see here.
Regular readers of Fat Planet, we played a few tracks in our radio show the days after and then started to search for new music, which brought us to broadcast several mixes in November and December 2006 and then do the Month of Kuduro in February. It's interesting to watch the history of the mp3s tagged kuduro on the Hypemachine and the history on Technorati.
But let's be clear, I'm not saying that nobody talked about Kuduro before Sept-Oct 2006. Actually you can see here, that Dj /Rupture mentioned it in 2005. It's not my goal to determine who was the first one (it could be interesting but I honestly don't really care), I would rather point out that the beginning of a lot of international and hipstery (me included) attention on this music started last year, with a couple posts on blogs here and there.

I'm writing that post for 2 reasons. First, well it's been a year and I thought it might be a good idea to have a look back on this. Second, I've been talking to Wayne&Wax and Maga Bo about it, and they both talked to me like this attention was still pretty strong and important and I feel the inverse.
I'm under the impression that the trend crashed down actually pretty fast a bit before summer 2007. The lack of new music being posted on mp3 blog, seems to be the most important factor to me (check Hypemachine). My experience is that it's more difficult to get new Kuduro than new Baile Funk. Also, the fact that Buraka Som Sistema haven't been playing North America yet (as i know, but maybe they did) would be another reason of a lack of media attention. I tried to book them for Pop MTL 2007, but Petty, the lead singer who seems to blow minds of all the people I talked to or who wrote about it, is 17 years old and still in school, so she won't travel but week-ends. Dancers are supposed to add a lot to the show, so it's quite a big amount of transatlantic flights to cover and don't expect monetary support from the Portugal embassy. Anyway, the way Bonde Do Role sustain attention on Baile Funk (in a good way or a bad way, I'll let you decide), doesn't seem to be the way of BSS for Kuduro.

I'm sure there will be a lot of people out there interested in hearing new stuff and now that Pop 2k7 craaaziness is behind me, I'm thinking of listening to some of the kuduro stuff I stocked and haven't quite been listening to really. But i guess the whole thing I'm trying to say is: where is the new exciting material (ie that appeals to white nerds like myself)? I know there's kuduro production going on in the community of Cape Verde in France, Portugal and elsewhere. I hope there's still things going on in Angola, even though Galianno sounded pretty pessimistic on the phone and the record shop guy where I bought cds in Paris did say the same. I know Dj Manaia is regularly posting mixes with his own remixes and new sounds. But yet, I feel like if things continue this way, we or Paul Devro would have to re-use the same words he used for Hyphy, while introducing kuduro back in Nov 06.
I guess I'm waiting for somebody to start a discussion about this now. Oh and sorry I haven't been posting a lot recently, I was all busy organizing Pop.

Une guerre civile pour une autre

Alguem pode-me levar ?

Então, quem vai-me levar ?

Khiasma Saphir Mix

DOWNLOAD --> Khiasma Saphir Mix

Tracklist:
01. KSS - Nou sé akiyo
02. King Bauco & Beenie Man - Weed And Grabba
03. Captain Nico and Eloquence - On A Ce Qu'il Faut !
04. Rishi Rich - Roll It Gal feat Alison hinds (bhangra mix)
05. Snap - The Power Of Bhangra [Snap Vs. Motivo]
06. Panjabi MC - jatt ho giya sharabee
07. Dj Aps - Tabba
08. Armand V.Helden And Jason Jinx - Ghetto House Groove
09. Dj Technics - We can ride the Boogie
10. Rod Lee & DJ Technics - Mama Say Again
11. DJ C - Billy Jungle (Featuring Shinehead)
12. wayne smith - under me sleng teng
13. Anthony Red Rose - Under Mi Fat Thing
14. Skoobz - Sleng Teng (Dub)
15. Capleton - Good Time
16. Skream - Check-it (feat. Warrior Queen)
17. The Bug - Jah War(Flowdan OK)
18. Half Pint - Greetings
19. Nacobeta - Mama cudi Instrumental
20. Dexplicit - Bullacake
21. Part 2 - One of Dem Days Remix featuring Fallacy
22. Roll Deep Ft. Skepta - Duppy
23. Dog Murras - Kupower
24. Dj Bula & Dj Revolution - O Barulho
25. Disco D - hug it out Bitch Diplo remix
26. MC Serginho - Eguinha Pocoto (Technobeat Version)
27. Dj Bula - Lacraia
28. Dj Funk - Chop Suey
29. Costuleta - Uahh
30. Ain't Nuttin' But Bass - Oooh ... That's My Song
31. DJ N.K - Batida da Kimbedja

Here's the second mix I recorded last sunday in one shot and it's quite different from my mix for Bounce Le Gros. I prepared that mix for the thursday mix series at a bar in Montreal called Saphir. It starts with a pretty diverse selection (bhangra, dancehall, Bmore), then move to a Mickael Jackson series and a Sleng Teng series, all of that with a bit of jungle. Then here's my attempt to mix what I consider as a whole, the whole of international Bass/booty music: dubstep, dancehall, booty techno, kuduro, grime, Baile Funk et Miami Bass (with a focus on kuduro). There's like a underground link between in all this musics that I tried to bring up in this mix.
