PSD - Welcome Back

As heard on BBC's Friction show, on which he was this week feature artist, DJ PSD is a producer from the suburbs of Toronto (Brampton) who's remixing recent and old bhangra classic. He's also doing some great mash-up as you can hear below. Make sure to check it out. Interesting enough, Bobby Friction is mentioning that Canada run the things these days in Bhangra and that UK, US and India should step up their game. More on this soon but if you want more right now, head right down here.

RDB bootleg Lil Wayne

Download RDB ft Lil Wayne - Paisa (A Milli)

Download Nindy Kaur ft Timbaland - Par Laga Dhey Veh

RDB just released a mini-cd of bootleg and mash-up with club and urban tracks called "Exclusives - The Biggest Club Remixes of 2009" from which I took the 2 songs above. There's 6 more songs on the compilation and 5 of them are downloadable on the band's website. I find the bootleg with Lil Wayne very well done and can't wait to play this at a party! I like it so much I put in my august top 10! But RDB's collaboration with US rappers aren't giving such a good result everytime, because even if the video below has almost 0.5 million views, I can't Snoop Dogg is at his best, even though he's a self proclaimed Snoop Dogg Millionaire...

BIG UP to my man Manish / DJ Publicity for rocking the afterparty!! He's the best bhangra-club DJ in Canada right now, don't let anybody tell you something else.

Download Panjabi MC - Panjabi Soldiers (A-Team)

Download Ms Scandalous - Kini Soni

A suivre...

Tigerstyle released Mystics, Martyrs and Maharajas

Tigerstyle's long waited full lenght dropped earlier this month. It's available on digital download on their webstire : www.nachural.co.uk. 17 tracks, pretty much all new material except a couple songs. You may have already heard Sinden's Balle!Shava! remix on the Masala radio show or elsewhere before, but there is way more than 130bpm electro here. It's a pretty diverse range of beats and production instead. Vybz Kartel is definitly a plus for one of the best track of the album. You'll find a track with a spanish mc and a bhangra beat structered as a reggaeton beat. There's a lot of r'n'b/garage female singing on the album that I dislike but I guess that's what's up when you live in the UK and want to do music for clubs. But there's also some serious dancefloor oriented music. Instead of Sinden's remix, I would rather go with that track which should definitly get people's reactions with it's heavy bassy kick drum and happy arrangements.

Download Tigerstyle - Bol!Bol!Bol! (192k)

Also download Tigerstyle's remix of Labh Janjua's Billo Tere Nakreh thanks to Palms Out Sounds. Really good remix! And for those of you who want more cutting edge indian urban music, I would suggest to check out the friction radio show on BBC; always some good stuff. Oh and did I mention bhangra bassline? More bhangra coming up, stay tune.

Jassi Sidhu: The Justin Timberlake of Bhangra

Jassi Sidhu used to be the lead singer of Desi boys band but he quited in 2002 to pursue a solo career. Every time he release an album, he usually trust the top of the charts for several weeks. Just like Justin Timberlake, girls falls for his smile, and guys appreciate the good pop hooks and the great production of his tracks (no this isn't basic sexist reduction :) ). His latest opus, The New Adventures of Jassi Siddhu, dropped last month and since then the track Ki Kehneh, with Bhangra legend Malkit Singh, is on top of the BBC Asian Network chart.
But my favorite song of the album is definitely Koka, which double the tempo several times during the song. It's such a great party pop song, you can't help but throw your hands in the air and do the light ball dance!

Ishq Bector - Looping in the Wealth

What I like about that guy (apart this 2 good songs) is that he represents what is, in my opinion, the future of music in the years to come: a great mix, a perfect blending, of different local sounds into one production that could be appealling to both sides. Lyrics aren't super interesting, but we're talking about pop music here, not crunk or leftfield. On the other hand, I very much like the beats on this 2 songs. The other point that makes him a great symbol is that Ishq was actually born in Winnipeg, Canada and found success in India. He's representing how music and immigration are building bridges between culture in a very concrete and creative way. The fact that I write about him in Montreal, not because I heard of him through Canadians network (media, word of mouth, etc.), but just because I found his stuff randomly, is also a great addition to the loop.

Ishq Bector ft Shakti Kapoor, Hrishitaa Bhatt & Pratichee - Dakku Daddy

Volume 2 of this project by renowned bhangra producer Ravi Bal and Punjab born singer Daljit Mattu. The first album had a huge success with the track 'Captain Bhangra Da' and according to Ravi Bal, this one has been made for a worlwide audience, not just a UK one. Captain Bhangra II is #1 on the UK Bhangra top 10. Here's the promo video and the opening track with a desi version.

Bhangra New Stuff

If kuduro thirst for new stuff seems hard to quench like Guillaume exposed in the last post, bhangra is well alive no matter what's going on the international hipster scene.

Two labels are taking care of things right now, Vip and Bazaar Records.

Just last week, Vip has released 3 albums, one of them being
Blitzkrieg "The Rhyme Book", debut from an Indian MC who have collaborated with Tigerstyle, Bikram Singh and Punjabi Hit Squad. Check the promo video >>>

On the latest CISM show I played two tracks from recent Vip releases, Jags Klimax and Specialist & Tru-Skool.
Jags Klimax is one of UK top bhangra DJ/Producer and his original production style have make lots of artists from around the world asked him for remix. The highlight on "The Album" is the track "Heer" featuring the Punjabi folkstress Sarbjit Kaur>>>

mp3: Jags Limax - Heer ft. Sarbjit Kaur (direct link)

"Repazent" from the duo Specialist & Tru-Skool was very awaited after their debut "Word is Born". In fact it's a very good Western influence album, here's the track with the James Brown sample >>>

mp3: Specialist & Tru-Skool - Saukhi Ni Kammai (direct link)

Tru-Skool is also the producer behind the first hyped Bazaar records release "Raw as Folk". The album features Bazaar own vocalists, Kaka Bhaniawala, Kulwinder Johal, Gurbhej Brar and Dippa Dosanjh (Satrang), all together on the massive "Raw as Folk Bolian" >>>

Apart of those two label releases, one discovery I made is
Dalvinder Singh. I very like songs I hearded from his new album "Udeeka". Here's the one I played in last radio show>>>

mp3: Dalvinder Singh - Yaar Da Viah (direct link)

Khiasma Saphir Mix

DOWNLOAD --> Khiasma Saphir Mix

Tracklist:
01. KSS - Nou sé akiyo
02. King Bauco & Beenie Man - Weed And Grabba
03. Captain Nico and Eloquence - On A Ce Qu'il Faut !
04. Rishi Rich - Roll It Gal feat Alison hinds (bhangra mix)
05. Snap - The Power Of Bhangra [Snap Vs. Motivo]
06. Panjabi MC - jatt ho giya sharabee
07. Dj Aps - Tabba
08. Armand V.Helden And Jason Jinx - Ghetto House Groove
09. Dj Technics - We can ride the Boogie
10. Rod Lee & DJ Technics - Mama Say Again
11. DJ C - Billy Jungle (Featuring Shinehead)
12. wayne smith - under me sleng teng
13. Anthony Red Rose - Under Mi Fat Thing
14. Skoobz - Sleng Teng (Dub)
15. Capleton - Good Time
16. Skream - Check-it (feat. Warrior Queen)
17. The Bug - Jah War(Flowdan OK)
18. Half Pint - Greetings
19. Nacobeta - Mama cudi Instrumental
20. Dexplicit - Bullacake
21. Part 2 - One of Dem Days Remix featuring Fallacy
22. Roll Deep Ft. Skepta - Duppy
23. Dog Murras - Kupower
24. Dj Bula & Dj Revolution - O Barulho
25. Disco D - hug it out Bitch Diplo remix
26. MC Serginho - Eguinha Pocoto (Technobeat Version)
27. Dj Bula - Lacraia
28. Dj Funk - Chop Suey
29. Costuleta - Uahh
30. Ain't Nuttin' But Bass - Oooh ... That's My Song
31. DJ N.K - Batida da Kimbedja

Here's the second mix I recorded last sunday in one shot and it's quite different from my mix for Bounce Le Gros. I prepared that mix for the thursday mix series at a bar in Montreal called Saphir. It starts with a pretty diverse selection (bhangra, dancehall, Bmore), then move to a Mickael Jackson series and a Sleng Teng series, all of that with a bit of jungle. Then here's my attempt to mix what I consider as a whole, the whole of international Bass/booty music: dubstep, dancehall, booty techno, kuduro, grime, Baile Funk et Miami Bass (with a focus on kuduro). There's like a underground link between in all this musics that I tried to bring up in this mix.

Bhangra(s) (Bhangra post 4)

Like maybe you already know it, Bhangra is a type of music created by members of the punjabi diaspora especially since the late 80's. Punjabis are coming from the province of Punjab, in the north-east of India, between Delhi and Pakistan. The main centers of Bhangra production are London (uk) and Toronto (can) which are also the cities with some of the biggest Punjabi communities outside India. In the late 80's, Bhangra started to get more attention by mixing more and more Punjabi percussions and lyrics with the music of people living in the same neighborhood: Caribbean people mainly.

Therefore, Bhangra music developed in many ways with the reggae movement and western music tendencies, which can explain that you'll find all kind of beats, structure and music under the name Bhangra and that's that variety that I'll expose in this post.
A band like Asian Dub Foundation, even it would be difficult to put it under the label Bhangra (first because they're coming from the Bengal, south of India), is probably one of the most well known example of that mix of influences that happened in music created by Indian immigrants in the London of the 90's. The other obvious, more recent example would be Panjabi MC with his hit that was even re-recorded with Jay-Z, showing how the American Record Industry acknowledge potential of non strictly African-American hip-hop production in the USA (See Bollyhood Records manifesto as an example of how Bhangra producers are responding to that). Oh and should I even mention that Bhangra is mainly the music of the youth, the weddings and parties?
Asian Dub Fondation - Rebel Warrior
Panjabi Mc - Mundian To Bach Ke

After that very short introduction, let's get into the real objective of that post: sharing and making discover the variety of what's called "Bhangra".
By listening to quite a few cds, reading here and there, watching videos, I came accross diverse music, tempo and rythm that were all presented as Bhangra. What I feel as less Western marked could be for example this tracks that are representing the usual classic material you'll find in any Bhangra cds:
Darshan Khella & Miss Pooja - Munda Dangia Gia
Sukhraj Nijjar - Veer Viah Ke Aaya
Here's even a acoustic one that I love from The Rough Guide To Bhangra Dance:
Madan Bata Sindhu - Mehndi/Madhorama Pencha

From there, you'll find a large variety of tracks that are using kind of the same song structure and of course this recognizable samples of percussions. What I wanted to show you is all the different connections that has been made:
Hip-Hop with Bhangra (classic and crunk):
Deep and Kamla Panjabi - Man On Fire
Kali Denali - Bohemia

Pop with Bhangra
Jassi Sidhu - Puth Jatt Thaa

Jungle/2-step with Bhangra
RDB - DilKarda
Midievil Punditz - Bhangra Fever
