Pour ceux qui n'iront pas aider directement sur place, il y a peu de choses à faire, à part donner un peu d'argent à des organismes reconnus, susceptibles d'en tirer le meilleur. C'est pourquoi, à MASALA, on vous dirige vers le site de la Croix Rouge Canadienne et on envoie, à notre manière, nos pensées et notre fraternité aux gens de la perle des Antilles.

There's no better way than the joyful (yet a bit sad) music of Haiti to suggest the path that leads to reconstruction after the terrible events that happened yesterday in Port-Au-Prince. For those who won't go there to help, there's only a few options left, one of them being to give money to recognized NGOs that will use it in the best manner. This is why, at MASALA, we suggest that you donate to your local Red Cross organization and we also send our thoughts and fraternity to the people of 'La Perle des Antilles' by sharing some of their music with you.

Bonjay - Gimmee Gimee EP

Bonjay took their sweet time but they are finally putting something out officially. I've been following them and supporting them for a bit more than a couple years now, after I first encountered Alanna while playing a gig in Ottawa. These guys have clearly a unique sound blending elements that are never blend together: Dancehall and electronic music being the basis from which they work with, on top of they add their influence of Soul R'n'B music as well as indie-rock/indie-pop songwriting.

They released the Gimmee Gimmee EP a few weeks ago and already got support from the like of FADER, XLR8R, Dazed and Confused so you can bet it's only the beginning for them. 4 of the 6 tracks have been floating around the internet already so I'll let you go here if you want, but here's some of the tracks for your pleasure. UK Funky Bashment Bombs

Dj Shredah is from Bristol, UK and Bristol is definitely the host of a great music scene. Just recently , we've seen Joker exploding the dubstep genre by adding some Love Symbol feel to it, while Dub Boy and the Ruffneck Discotek crew are keeping things moving on the dancehall/reggae side. And it was during Dub Boy's mix at Karnival in MTL that I first heard the tune featured here, a Funky revisit of Vybz Kartel's massive hit "Ramping Shop". Dub Boy was later telling me he even liked that version better than the original. Like the Heatwave blog, we've been talking and following the crossover between Funky and dancehall for a while now and things are getting into place, with XLR8R doing it's cover on Funky and asking Gabriel from Heatwave to do Funky Bashment mix. The result is terrific mix full of dubplates and is definitely a must listen. Head over there to download it and for the tracklist. You'll find Dj Shredah contribution in there.

Shredah dropped a great compilation of home made Funky-Dancehall mash-ups a few month ago called 100% SHREDAH REMIX BASHMENT VS FUNKY VOL 1. Be warned, the man as way more in stock and vol.2 is on it's way very soon! He was kind enough to send me a promo and there's bombs in there, so keep an eye on the guy. This is exclusive for Masala.

Dj Shredah vit à Bristol, UK et Bristol abrite une excellente scène musicale. Récemment, on a pu voir Joker faire explosé le dubstep en y ajoutant une bonne touche de groove à la Love Symbol, et pendant ce temps Dub Boy et son crew du Ruffneck Discotek continue à faire bouger les choses du coté dancehall/reggae. Et c'est pendant le mix de Dub Boy durant le premier Karnival à MTL que j'ai d'abord entendu le morceau présenté plus haut, un remix funky du hit de Vybz Kartel: "Ramping Shop". Dub Boy m'a d'ailleurs dit le lendemain qu'il préférait cette version à l'original. Comme chez Heatwave, nous avons parlé et suivi le crossover entre Funky et dancehall depuis un moment et les choses semblent se mettrent en place maintenant, avec XLR8R qui fait sa couv de septembre sur le Funky et qui demande à Gabriel de Heatwave de faire un Funky Bashment mix. Le résultat est super, plein de dubplates et c'est un mix qu'il faut absolument écouter. Allez faire un tour ici pour le télécharger et pour la liste des morceaux. Il y a quelques mois, Shredah a sorti une excellente compilation de mash-up Funky-Dancehall fait maison qui s'appelle 100% SHREDAH REMIX BASHMENT VS FUNKY VOL 1. Je prépare ma conférence pour Pop Montreal (avec Wayne&Wax, /Rupture et Brian Shimkovtiz), sur le concept d'authenticité dans la musique du monde et cela m'a amené ce soir à faire un peu plus de recherche sur le dancehall reggae japonais. La scène à l'air d'être vraiment extrêmement importante avec de très grosse manifestation comme le Yokohama Reggae Sai (40 000 personnes en 2008). Beaucoup de chose très intéressantes sur le sujet a priori, mais j'avoue ne pas pouvoir aller trop en profondeur la-dessus. I'm prepping my conference for Pop Montreal (with Wayne&Wax, /Rupture and Brian Shimkovtiz) on the concept of authenticity in world music and it brought me to do some research on japanese dancehall/reggae. The scene seems to be very big with some shows bringing up to 40 000 people like the Yokohama Reggae Sai. There should be a lot of interesting things to say on the topic, but I must admit I can't go to deep in this because I'm really ignorant about Japan in general. Valeo September Top 10

Back again with a new top 10. I guess you can tell what are my obsessions lately by this tracklist. It's pretty much a lot of UK Funky / Tropicalish 130 bpm stuff (Kyla, Man&Man, Dj Massacre, Sam Tiba, Silverlink). Expect some mixes coming up, je me sors les doigts du cul.

There's a few notable exceptions though, being Cumbia Villera treatement of Major Lazer's Hold The Line by Frikstailers and, to keep it in Argentina, Dancehall fire by one of my favorite female MC: Princesa. Also, I'm loving this collaboration between DuttyArtz's Geko Jones and the always excellent Uproot Andy. A more recent discovery is one of Necessary Mayhem latest production the excellent Joker Smoker Riddim. On the disco dub side, Terje's great remix of Paul Simon hooked me yesterday night during a CFCF mix (shout out to Seb Diamond who also pointed me into Terje's direction a little while ago). Dancehall: Tak Tak y Mas de Colombia

Même si c'est un genre qui reste plutôt marginal en Colombie, la scène dancehall du nord du pays semble se trouver une identité de plus en plus forte et originale avec des rythmiques et une façon de remixer propre à la région caribéenne atlantique. Voici un petit tour d'horizon des dernières nouveautés du pays de la salsa, cumbia, porro et vallenato.

Jhon el Legendario qui est présentement au Chili pour faire des concerts géants, a sorti dernièrement deux clips remarquables où le mélange des genres est mis de l'avant.

Nous avons déjà joué quelques fois à l'émission de radio Masala des remix qui reprennent le Tak Tak, cette rythmique dont Jhon est l'auteur. Il n'y a aucun doute en écoutant le morceau, qu'il s'est inspiré des sound systems champeta, ce style de musique typiquement créole de Colombie.

De Cartagena, Reyes on the mic est un groupe qui oeuvre sur la scène rap depuis déjà quelques années. Encore une fois, un nouveau morceau avec une vibe très interessante. Produit par Dever, un producteur et DJ très actif de Cartagena et organisateur des soirées passa passa sound system.

Un autre à surveiller est le jeune Lil Silvio qui a une voix et un flow personnel. Il semble être en quelque sorte le petit protégé de Dever. Lors d'une discussion avec Dj /Rupture, il m'a fait remarquer que son timbre de voix était proche de celui de Lady Saw.

Pour terminer, Hety Y Zambo de l'ile de San Andres, où l'anglais et l'espagnol se côtoient, ont sorti un album trés varié au début de l'année "dreams can come true". Ce morceau, qui est un de mes préférés du groupe, sort toutefois du lot avec une saveur créole d'amérique centrale.

Coco Taxi de Stockholm en Suède vient de nous envoyer ce remix ce matin et j'ai voulu le poster car il sort vraiment du lot de remix rave electro qui ont noyé cette track Mambo de Maluca. Karnival!

Il y a de bonnes soirées qui se préparent à Montreal pour les semaines à venir! D'abord Masala Sono #1 qui s'en vient pour le samedi 29 août avec les membres Montréalais de Masala (+ d'infos très vite) et aussi (ex Ghislain) Poirier qui va lancer une nouvelle soirée régulière, un nouveau Bounce Le Gros en quelque sorte, qui s'appelle KARNIVAL. Gardez-bien ce nom là en tête.

Go! This is Aziatic's Punta!

Ok, the blog is running a bit slowly these days! Khiasma is now in Toronto spending his days trying to leech the network from his new neighbors, Jeune Premier is organizing a big and hot event for the International youth day on august 12 in St-Michel and I'm stuck in front of my computer trying to learn some software for my new job and therefore, spending my days in front of my computer!

Tonight I was in a Punta mood. For those of you who don't know what punta is a traditional form of dance music from central america made by garifuna in Belize and Honduras.

Anyway, I've just found this great puntarock/dancehall tune tonight from this guy named Aziatic aka “the Son of Hopkins” previously known as AZ in the rap game: Go!

Ms Dynamite - Bad Gyal

Ms Dynamite and Sticky's killer single "Bad Gyal", that we've been playing a lot on the radio show and during our dj sets over the last few months, just leaked through here and there. She also just put up an awesome new track on her myspace that heatwave ripped and shared a few days back here and they put up a video where she sings over a DJ Zinc tune (see video below and download Zinc's Killa sound). We definitely can't wait for that new album to drop!!!

Dancehall Reworks

J'ai reçu cet email de Stefan, alias Stefski, m'orientant vers son blog pour écouter son remix de Gappy Ranks. J'aime beaucoup le coté minimal de la version et les parties de claviers malines. Après, c'est clair que tu me mets des sons de steel pan d'une manière ou d'une autre et c'est automatique, j'approuve! Stefski fait parti de la nouvelle scène qu'on pourrait qualifier de hipster dancehall qui sévit en Allemagne et en Scandinavie actuellement. Last week I had the chance to talk with my friend Moemedi of Ruff riddims based in Palapye Botswana. This guy is working really hard with his crew to release multiple artists and tracks from Botswana doing some dancehall, Hip Hop, Kwaito.
