Poirier feat. Nik Myo - Mangnen L'boulé (Riddim Wise Remix)

Our good friends at Riddim Wise sent us this beautiful reggae/dubstep remix of Poirier's haunted and haunting kreyol song with Nik Myo off his 2007 album No Ground Under. Riddim Wise is one of the most listened reggae radio show in Montreal if not the most listened to. It's broadcasted just after the second broadcast of Masala on sunday afternoon on CISM (the name of the radio station hence our blog name). Nos bons amis de Riddim Wise nous ont envoyé ce magnifique remix reggae/dubstep de Mangnen L'boulé de Poirier. Un morceau hanté et hantant, chanté en Creole par Nik Myo, tiré de l'album No Ground Under sorti sur Ninja Tune en 2007. Riddim Wise est l'une des émissions de radio dédiée au reggae la plus écoutée au Québec, si ce n'est la plus écoutée. L'émission est diffusée juste après la rediffusion de Masala les dimanche après-midi de 16h à 18h, sur les ondes de CISM (c'est le nom de la radio, d'où le nom de notre blog). Je prépare ma conférence pour Pop Montreal (avec Wayne&Wax, /Rupture et Brian Shimkovtiz), sur le concept d'authenticité dans la musique du monde et cela m'a amené ce soir à faire un peu plus de recherche sur le dancehall reggae japonais. La scène à l'air d'être vraiment extrêmement importante avec de très grosse manifestation comme le Yokohama Reggae Sai (40 000 personnes en 2008). Beaucoup de chose très intéressantes sur le sujet a priori, mais j'avoue ne pas pouvoir aller trop en profondeur la-dessus. I'm prepping my conference for Pop Montreal (with Wayne&Wax, /Rupture and Brian Shimkovtiz) on the concept of authenticity in world music and it brought me to do some research on japanese dancehall/reggae. The scene seems to be very big with some shows bringing up to 40 000 people like the Yokohama Reggae Sai. There should be a lot of interesting things to say on the topic, but I must admit I can't go to deep in this because I'm really ignorant about Japan in general. Valeo September Top 10

Back again with a new top 10. I guess you can tell what are my obsessions lately by this tracklist. It's pretty much a lot of UK Funky / Tropicalish 130 bpm stuff (Kyla, Man&Man, Dj Massacre, Sam Tiba, Silverlink). Expect some mixes coming up, je me sors les doigts du cul.

There's a few notable exceptions though, being Cumbia Villera treatement of Major Lazer's Hold The Line by Frikstailers and, to keep it in Argentina, Dancehall fire by one of my favorite female MC: Princesa. Also, I'm loving this collaboration between DuttyArtz's Geko Jones and the always excellent Uproot Andy. A more recent discovery is one of Necessary Mayhem latest production the excellent Joker Smoker Riddim. On the disco dub side, Terje's great remix of Paul Simon hooked me yesterday night during a CFCF mix (shout out to Seb Diamond who also pointed me into Terje's direction a little while ago). Le monde du reggae/dancehall a beau changer à l'ère du numérique, reste que la fin de l'année s'accompagne toujours des compils rétrospectives de chez Greensleeves et VP. C'est une bonne occasion pour ceux qui suivent plus ou moins la scène ou qui ne veulent pas se taper le même riddim pendant une heure de s'approprier les hits de l'anné et winer vos matantes à Noël...

Chez les 2 labels, on divise les compils en 2 CD, 1 roots et 1 dancehall. Ce qui donne chez Greensleeves The Biggest Reggae One-Drop Anthems et The Biggest Ragga Dancehall Anthems, et chez VP, Stricltly the Best vol.37 et 38.

Pitchfork dans sa série The Month in Reggae/Dancehall y va aussi d'une récap de l'année 2007 et parle de la fin des 45 tours, support mythique de la culture reggae, abandonné par les DJ et les labels. La compil de Greensleeves, From Dubplate to Download, est assez significative à ce sujet et la mise en place d'un magasin en ligne chez Greensleeves marque un tournant dans la commercialisation du genre.

Autre fait important rapporté par Pitchfork, "la roots" est maintenant entre les mains de 3 petits blancs-becs: Collie Budz, Gentleman et Albarosie. Comment un sicilien peut arriver avec une des plus grosses tracks de l'année (Kingstown Town) ? Le Come Around de Collie Budz a été énorme aussi et Gentleman nous a donné l'excellente Can't Hold Us Down avec le vétéran Barrington Levy.

Quant à moi, l'année 2007 a surtout été marqué par les nouvelles recrues comme Busy Signal, Mavado, Munga et Aidonia. Busy m'impressionne vraiment par sa polyvalence, passant du Raging Bull au VIP à ses propres pièces comme la récente Nah Go A Jail. Pour sa part, Mavado s'est créé un personnage facilement reconnaissable par son "anywaaayyyyy", baignant dans un imaginaire gangsta sombre et prophétique. Son album Gangsta for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks est le meilleur de l'année à mon avis.

J'ai aussi aimé les penchants rave-électro de Don Corleone sur des rythmiques comme Raging Bull ou Sativa. Il ne faudrait pas oublier non plus le ragga kreyol de Guadeloupe et des antilles françaises avec les sorties de Krys, Saïk et Daly.

Si la fin de la l'année marque le temps des rétrospectives, elle marque aussi le début de la saison du soca, à l'approche du carnaval de Trinidad et Tobago qui se déroule cette année les 4 et 5 février. C'est plutôt tranquille ces temps-ci, les aspirants s'observent et usent de stratégies afin de ne pas brûler leurs hits avant la parade des bands. Est-ce que Machel va réussir à conserver son titre ? Vous pouvez suivre l'action sur Toronto-Lime, Trini Jungle Juice ou sur le Low-Bee forum ou les soca geeks se font aller...


The world of reggae/dancehall is changing with digital dowloads and the takeover of the genre 2 biggest international labels, Greensleeves and VP. Still, the end of the year is always time for retrospectives. VP and Greensleeves have put out their roots and dancehall 2007 compilations and Pitchfork is already on the top 10 ting.

The Pitchfork article is also interesting because they talk about the end of 45 and pale-faced dudes like Albarosie, Gentleman and Collie Budz who are taking more and more place on the roots scene. Did you knew that the guy responsible for Kingston Town was Sicilian ?!?!

For my part, 2007 in reggae/dancehall was the year of newcomers like Busy Signal, Mavado and Munga. They sound fresh, each one have their own style and dancehall is going crazy with dem riding riddims from 95 to 130 to 160 bpm... Who knows what will happen next ??? Corleone still running the game with sick beats like Raging Bull or Sativa and veterans like Beenie, Elephant Man, or Mr. Vegas still putting levels high. And what about this mad ragga kreyol from Guadeloupe and French Caribbean !?

For me, dancehall is the most innovative and exciting genre right now, as hip hop and reggaeton gets more and more redundant and laughable.

The end of the years may be the time of retro but it's also the beginning of the Soca season. Things are pretty quiet now, songs are getting out slowly as opponents keeping their big tracks for the final. Carnival is early this year, parade of the bands will take place on February 4th and 5th in Trinidad and Tobago. You can follow the action on Toronto-Lime, Trini Jungle Juice or on the Low-Bee board where the fetes already started 2 months ago...

As I mentioned it in the previous post, Germaica released several compilation of Polish reggae/dancehall artists, singing in Polish. Here's a few picks from Polski Ogien, a 2006 compilation that reached the top 30 in Poland. Solid.

Polish Ragga? Vavamuffin!

J'ai découvert ce groupe par hasard pendant mes pérégrinations soulseekienne. J'ai d'abord remarqué la solidité d'ensemble du morceau Jah Jest Prezydentem, bon flow varié de différent Mcs et qualité de la production avec un son Ragga 90's tel que je l'aime ces temps-ci. Ensuite, je me suis attardé sur la langue que je n'arrivais pas à identifier et là, surprise pour moi, car après un petit googling je me rend compte que Vavamuffin et probablement le plus gros groupe de reggae/dancehall de Pologne, sinon d'Europe de l'Est.

Vavamuffin s'est formé à Warsaw en 2003, réunissant trois générations de la scène reggae polonaise et a aboutit à un premier album, Vabang!, sorti en 2005 sur SONY/BMG. Vous pouvez écouter l'album en entier sur ce blog. L'un des 3 chanteurs a également un projet solo, sous le nom de Mr Reggaenerator. En 2006 sort Dubang, un album de remix du premier album avec des versions trés variées allant du Dub à la jungle en passant par le hip-hop, le funk et autres. L'ensemble n'est pas incroyable, mais à surtout le mérite de nous faire découvrir une scène assez méconnue. Le label Germaica a également sortie des compilations de reggae/dancehall polonais.

ENGLISH SHORTER VERSION:
I came accross Vavamuffin through on soulseek and was first caught by the quality of the flow and the production of the track: Jah Jest Prezydentem. But i couldn't figure out the language, so after some googling I found out that Vavamuffin is probably the biggest reggae/dancehall band in Poland, but even in Eastern Europe. They started in 2003, bringing together 3 generations of polish reggae artists and released their first album Vabang! in 2005 (stream the album). In 2006, Dubang came out, a remix album of Vabang. The Germaica label also released some other reggae/dancehall polish artists work.
