Fnaire Nouveau EP avec CHEB BILAL

Fnaire est un groupe fétiche de Masala. Nous les suivons depuis leur excellent album Yed El Henna, sorti durant l'été 2007. J'avais fait un post sur eux et mis à télécharger un extrait de l'album. Et bien je n'avais pas encore visité leur tout nouveau site web, et je viens de m'apercevoir qu'ils ont donné un tout nouvel EP au courant de l'été. Le EP a été conçu en collaboration avec le chanteur Raï Cheb Bilal et il tourne autour de l'amitié nécessaires entre marocains et algérien. Allez faire un tour sur leur site pour plus d'info.

RDB bootleg Lil Wayne

La semaine dernière pour inaugurer ma vie torontoise comme il se doit, j'ai été voir RDB (Rythm Dhol Bass) en concert gratuit au Harbourt Front Center. C'était une nuit à l'humidité intense et les lumières faisaient ressembler la tour CN à un OVNI vu d'en dessous. Le concert était déjà commencé lorsque nous sommes descendus du taxi et arrivés à quelques dizaines de mètres du lieu, on entendait les cris des jeunes filles et le gros son de basse/dhol. Ca promet...

Et franchement on a pas été déçu même si la grande partie du show était du lipsync, l'enthousiasme du public a comblé le manque de performance et Kuly, le membre canadien de RDB, a fait un excellent boulot de MC. Quant à Nindy Kaur, elle donnait plus l'impression de ne pas savoir ce qu'elle faisait sur le stage... RDB c'est 3 frères Sikh qui font dans le bhangra urbain depuis plusieurs années déjà et ça fait un petit bout qu'on les suit ici à Masala. RDB vient de sortir un mini-cd de bootleg et mash-up club et urbain qui s'appelle "Exclusives - The Biggest Club Remixes of 2009" dont sont tirés ces deux morceaux. Il y en a 6 autres sur la compile dont 5 sont téléchargeable gratuitement sur le site web du groupe. Je trouve le bootleg de Lil Wayne vraiment très réussi et j'ai vraiment hâte de le jouer en soirée! Je l'aime tellement en fait, que je l'ai mis dans mon top 10 du mois d'août! Bon les collabos entre RDB et les rappeurs américains ne sont toutefois toujours réussi, car même si cette video en est à presque 500 000 views, on peut pas dire que Snoop Dogg soit à son meilleur, même si c'est un Snoop Dogg Millionaire...

Rima Spray - Rap de Venezuela

Un petit post rapide ce soir pour partager cette découverte de Caracas, Rima Spray, un groupe de hip hop du Vénézuela. J'apprécis particulièrement Le morceau de ce clip "Renacer" qui est particulièrement accrocheur avec ses glitchs.



Sinon, le hip-hop au Vénézuela semble être assez actif. Un documentaire,"El documental", sur le sujet semble dresser un bon portrait de la situation.

Ruff Riddims from Botswana

Last week I had the chance to talk with my friend Moemedi of Ruff riddims based in Palapye Botswana. This guy is working really hard with his crew to release multiple artists and tracks from Botswana doing some dancehall, Hip Hop, Kwaito.

They've sent to us a couple of tracks that are just really nice. Masala is really proud to present some of their tracks of their featured artists.

De retour de France où j'ai passé deux semaines pour les fêtes de fin d'année, ça me prend quelques jours pour revenir à la normale et pense à peut-être partager un peu de ce qu'on m'envoie comme information. Toujours en rapport avec /Rupture, Ghislain m'a envoyé ce lien vers une excellente compilation de rap d'Afrique du Sud qui donne une bonne idée du spectre du genre dans ce pays. Zola et Mapaputsi sont des noms connus du Kwaito et vous trouverez quelques morceaux kwaito parmi les 15 morceaux qui forment cette compilation gratuite qui s'appelle African Swim et qui forme la trame sonore d'un nouveau jeu video de Ubisoft (Wired). Voici la tracklist du cd "New Africa", ça vous donnera une idée. Pas mal de classique de la "nouvelle musique urbaine" d'Afrique à découvrir si vous ne connaissez pas. Même qu'il y a un torrent en FLAC qui traîne alors... Je vous met la track d'Izé qui est une de mes préférées de son album Kunana Spirit sorti fin 2007. African techno in da place.

Zurita en tu Cabeza!

Vous vous souvenez de Cabeza! ce label en ligne d'argentine qui nous avez gratifié de deux compilations de mash-up cumbia/hip-hop/dancehall/electro? Et bien le troisième opus est sorti récemment et il vaut vraiment quelques minutes de votre attention. Aux commandes, le remixer Zurita de San Telmo qui propose 7 titres de très honorable facture avec un peu de Das Efx, de Calle 13, de Method Man, mashé avec un morceau à l'ambiance très tropicale, sur le deuxième morceau et une cumbia villera pour El Gigante Del Style. Mais ce que j'ai sorti du EP c'est un remix du Informer de Snow, mashé avec du Shaggy, de la cumbia, le bam bam riddim et un beat reggaeton entre autre. Excellent morceaux de party!

(En Ingles) Remembre the online label from Argentina called Cabeza! who gave us two compilations of mash-up of Cumbia/hip-hop/dancehall/electro? Well the 3rd effort just got released and it really deserved your attention! It's 7 good tracks from remixer Zurita with a little bit of DasEFX, Calle 13, Method Man and others, mashed with some tropical cumbia (track 2) or some cumbia villera on El Gigante Del Style. But what I extracted from the EP for you is a remix of Informer by Snow, clashed with Shaggy and the Bam Bam riddim and some cumbia and a reggaeton beat over the top. Great party track!


J'ai aussi vraiment apprécié l'utilisation du sample de Daft Punk sur ce morceau!
I also really liked how he used that Daft Punk sample in this track!

Nomadic Massive

Today, I've meet one of the creator of the greats videos of Nomadic Massive, a group from Montreal. I saw this group early this year in first part of Wyclef Jean in Montreal. What they are doing is really nice, they rap in french, creole, english, spanish and arabic with a nice blend of influence.

Haiti Hip-Hop Crunk. ECP report

Last year we did a podcast (yeah I know we're due for another one) on Haitian Hip-Hop showcasing different talents of the up and coming rap scene of the island. Our good friend Etienne Coté-Paluck is familiar with Haiti and has been going there almost every year for the last 10 years. If you're a Masala regular you might also have listen to Etienne's last Masala participation a few month ago.

Etienne just posted 2 podcast from his last trip in April on his website Shuffle. The second one focus on hip-hop while the first one is a copy of a very entertaining mix Etienne did at a local radio station. [Podshuffle 82] [Podshuffle 81]. I urge you to click on Podshuffle 82 and have a listen! You'll hear the sound of today's underground Hip-hop in Haiti, featuring Rock Fam, Mecca Aka Grimo, Anbiskad 64 or Barikad Crew. Talking about Barikad Crew, Etienne sent us an email a couple weeks ago, the same day we learned about Pitti passing away, announcing the terrible news that 5 members of the Crew died in a car accident. BC is definitely one of the biggest name in Haiti's Hip-Hop scene so you can imagine what a choc it was for people there. A 10 min reportage on TV. Press 1 and 2. Here's a heavily kompa influenced track from Barikad Crew. Pretty different from the Crunk rap they usually do.

Excellent morceau cela va sans dire, muy lindo. On remarquera dans le pont une référence au Ghana (du moins il me semble) ce qui fait écho au dernier post de /Rupture. On remarquera le shout out fait à Sidestepper dans la section lien. On se souvient de leur, lui aussi excellent, Mas Papaya, téléchargeable sur leur myspace.

Hope you'll appreciate this great track by, apparently one of the best hip-hop band in Colombia these days. Note a reference to Ghana in the bridge (sound like it) which leads us to /Rupture last post. Crank Dat Chile

Dans quelques heures je serais au Chili pour 3 semaines, puis je partirai pour 3 semaines au Brésil ou je resterai probablement à Rio la plupart du temps.
Je pars avec une question, qu'est-ce qui se passe musicalement au Chili? On connaît Ricardo Villalobos ou encore, dans un autre genre, Panico, et je devine la présence d'une scène indie constituée de jeunes sortis des écoles d'art de Santiago. Mais qu'en est-il de la scène de la musique urbaine? Apparement le hip-hop chilien serait très inspiré par la "nouvelle chanson Chilienne" à tendance revendicative et sociale. J'ai écouté quelques bon trucs sur myspace, mais rien de renversant vraiment. A vrai dire, mes débuts de recherche m'ont fait m'attarder sur du Crunk Chilien plus gangster ou Flaite comme ils disent. In a few hours I'll be in Chile for 3 weeks, then I'll go to Brazil for 3 weeks also, where I most probably will stay in Rio for the most part.
I'm going with one question: What's going on in music in Chile? Everybody knows Ricardo Villalobos or, in another genre, Panico, and can foresee an indie music scene composed of art school former or current students. But what's happening in the urban music scene? It seems that Chilean hip-hop is inspired by the "new chilean chanson", more revendicative et socially conscious. I listened to some good stuff on myspace, but nothing too crazy. To be honest my first research brought me to some Chilean Crunk. More gangsta or Flaite like they say?
