J'ai eu une dicussion au Brésil avec quelques amis à propos des inéquités sociales du pays et de ses différences avec le Canada... ils furent très surpris d'apprendre que des enfants souffrent de la faim à Montréal ou que l'on puisse littéralement crever du froid dans la rue en hiver. De quoi en faire dire que Cuba était l'endroit parfait.
Mon ami Garnizé, percusionniste professionnel ayant mit le pied quelques fois à Cuba, me racontait que, lorsque l'on débarque à l'aéroport de La Havane, un panneau nous accueille avec cette inscription (ou presque): " Ce soir sur Terre, 5 000 enfants* dormiront dans la rue et aucun d'entre-eux ne sera Cubain". Pour un Brésilien qui a déjà dormi sur le béton, c'est une affirmation plus que convainquante. Ajoutez à cela l'éducation et les soins de santé gratuits et vous vous tatouez un Che sur le bras.
Puis vint un truc plus ou moins drôle. Les jeux Pan-Américains commencèrent et, après une semaine, les journaux firent leurs choux gras avec la défection de 4 membres de la délégation cubaine, incluant leur deux boxeurs champions. Nous étions à Vila Mimosa pour notre dernière journée à Rio la police ratissait le quartier pour les trouver. Les deux boxers se firent finalement pincer, putes aux bras, s'enfilant des vodka-red bull derrière la cravate avec un promoteur allemand. Selon cet article, ils furent déportés à Cuba durant la semaine.
Beaucoup de réflexions firent suite à l'événement, et les blogueurs brésiliens se questionnent:
"Pourquoi fuient-ils si leur condition d'athlètes de haut niveau est le résultat direct du support offert par le peuple et l'état cubain? Une amie, socialiste convaincue et grande sympathisante du régime castriste, est revenue dévastée d'un voyage sur l'Ile. La majorité des jeunes de la vieille Havane "rêvant du capitalisme". "Beaucoup de choses manquent à Cuba, surtout la liberté", lui confiait un garçon de 19 ans. Nous voyons constemment Fidel Castro et son gouvernement être la cible de critiques dures."

Ceci dit, les brésiliens adoram Cuba. La compétition entre le Brésil et Cuba pour la seconde place du classement des médailles fut enlevante. Certains disent que les Cubains en sortent grands vainqueurs, si l'on considère leur ratio de médailles d'or par rapport à leur population et leur PIB.
Alors Garnizé, Cuba est-il toujours l'endroit rêvé?

When I was in Brazil, I had a discussion with some local friends about inequality and poverty in the country, social differences with Canada,... and they were very shocked to learn that there are children in Montreal starving or that homeless people died in the streets in winter. So some ended up to say that maybe Cuba was the perfect country.
My friend Garnizé, a professional percussionist who have been to Cuba a couple times, told me that when you arrive at the airport at La Havana, there's a board where it's written "Tonight in the world, 5,000 kids* will sleep in the street but none of them will be Cuban" or something like that. For a Brazilian who have already slept in the street, this is a strong and charming statement. Adding to this free education and free a+ health system and you get that Che Guevara tattoo on your arm.
Then came the funny, well maybe not so funny, thing. Pan-American games begun and 1 week after, you have those stories all over the paper with 4 members of the Cuban delegation defecting, with emphasis on the 2 champion boxers. We were in Vila Mimosa for our last day in Rio and police were looking for them there... They finally got caught in a resort with putas, drinking vodka-red bull with a german promoter and got deported back to Cuba during the week according to this article.
Lots of reflexion have been made about this event and the why ??? on different Brazilian blogs:
"Why do they run away if the condition of high profile athletes reached by them is, in great part, direct result of the support granted by the people and the state of Cuba? A friend of mine, a socialist to the bone and great enthusiast of the castrist regime, has returned devastated from a recent trip to the island where it was evidenced that the majority of the young people in Old Havana “dream about capitalism”. “Here lacks many things. Mainly freedom”, a 19 years old boy told her. We constantly witness hard criticism to Fidel Castro and his government."

That said, Brazilians adoram Cuba, the fight between Brazil and Cuba for 2nd place was thrilling and some says that Cuba is the big winner of this Pan-American games according to the gold medals-population-GDP pro-rata.
So Garnizé, is Cuba still the perfect country ?
