Merci aux françâs Thibaut et 93reizh qui nous ont fait parvenir le reportage de Tracks sur le baile funk ou funk carioca. Comme quoi il y aura toujours des petits malins qui nous permettront de contourner le système :)

À propos du reportage, il est évident qu'en 15 minutes il est difficile de faire le tour de la question mais c'est un aperçu de ce que pourrait être un plus long docu sur la percée du funk carioca à l'international. Ça serait bien de suivre Sandrinho à Paris où voir le travail de Haaksman et son label Man recordings en Allemagne. Et bien sûr, aborder ce bon vieux débat des droits d'auteurs et à qui va profiter cet engouement du "premier monde" pour cette musique venue droit de "l'enfer des favelas" ?

Manak-E - Aaja

Ce nom ne vous dit probablement rien mais Manak-E est plutôt important sur la scène bhangra internationale. Aaja son nouvel album fait beaucoup de bruit en ce moment et avec raison! On y retrouve des productions de RDB, Sangra Vibes, Jeeti et Frantic Kam. Voici quelques-uns des bons morceaux de l'album.

J'ai découvert cette émission hier en faisant le tracking du sitemeter de Masala. Le TRACKS de cette semaine a un reportage sur le Baile Funk et Masala se retrouve dans les liens. Dommage que l'émission ne soit pas disponible pour les résidents du Québec. Par contre, j'ai réussi à retracer quelques archives très intéressantes sur dailymotion.

Captain Bhangra II

Un nouveau film de pirate... Plus sérieusement, c'est un projet du producteur bhangra renommé, Ravi Bal, et du chanteur originaire du Punjab, Daljit Mattu. Le premier volume a connu beaucoup de succès grâce à la pièce 'Captain Bhangra Da' et Ravi Bal affirme que ce 2e effort est un album de bhangra pour une audience internationale et non seulement UK. Captain Bhangra II est #1 du top 10 UK Bhangra. Voici le video promo et un mp3 de la pièce qui ouvre l'album.

Volume 2 of this project by renowned bhangra producer Ravi Bal and Punjab born singer Daljit Mattu. Rio Carnaval 2008 news

Des petites nouvelles du carnaval de Rio. Le phénomène 'Tropa de Elite' sera du défilé des groupes spéciaux en tant que mini-parade du Unidos da Tijuca. Le film a fait beaucoup parlé au Brésil par son sujet mais aussi par son méga-piratage qui a eu lieu 2 mois avant sa sortie officielle alors qu'une copie préliminaire a été mise sur le net. The movie as been part of a big controversy in Brasil because a preliminary version of it was leaked on the internet 2 months before his official release in theater. Les brésiliens aiment beaucoup jouer et déconner. Le baile funk utilise souvent des samples ludiques comme les thèmes de Rocky ou Adams Family, du banjo western ou des sons de fusils genre Far West... Dernièrement, on a eu droit à la chanson des grenouilles que j'aime beaucoup. Il y a aussi le Chumbo Quente qu'on dirait sorti d'Il était une fois dans l'Ouest et le hit de l'heure, la Dança do Créu avec la fameuse guimbarde...

Masalavision #2: Batalha de MC

2e des petites collations épicées de Masala. Des images tournées l'été dernier à Rio lors d'un MC battle à la Fundiçao Progresso dans Lapa, quartier général du hip hop carioca. Les MC devait utiliser les mots inscrits au tableau dans leur freestyle et ça a donné de beaux moments. Je crois que l'événement était organisé en collaboration avec une association qui fait la promotion du hip hop dans tout le Brésil. De là le chanteur genre troubadour du Nordeste à la fin pour faire le lien entre folklore et rap. Il est vrai que dans un pays à plusieurs vitesses où plusieurs époques se côtoient, il est encore plus nécessaire d'avoir des troubadours qui rapportent les nouvelles du ghetto, distordues par les médias et l'élite dominante.

#2 of the homemade Masala snacks. This was taken from an MC battle at Fundiçao Progresso in Lapa, headquarters of carioca hip hop. The MCs were oblige to use words on the board in their freestyle. The folk singer at the end was invited by a brasilian hip hop promotion group to make links between Nordeste traditionnal music and rap. It is true that a rapper living in a favela in Rio can play an important role by reporting the news distorted by medias and elites in control, just like troubadours were doing in Middle Ages.

My Saturday night in a Baile Funk in Rio

Last saturday we went to the Boquerao do Passeio, next door from the national airport, to see one of the oldest and respected dj in the scene: Dj Amazing Clay. His soundsystem, the Curtisomrio was inviting one of the team of the Furacao 2000 in that venue which is basicaly a huge dancehall. The Aquecimento was non-stop and the volume was near to be the one of an airplane.. Pretty crazy my hears were buzzing for 2 days.

Baile Atuais pt.2: Aquecimento do ritmo

Même si on compare souvent le baile au Miami bass, on peut aussi tirer certaines ressemblances avec le reggae-dancehall et la culture soundsystem jamaicaine, des caraïbes et du nord de l'Amérique du Sud. Sauf que dans le baile funk, ce sont les producteurs qui s'approprient une ryhtmique pour faire une nouvelle version de l'instru et chaque équipe ira de sa variante avec ses propres MCs par la suite.

If we often compare Baile funk to Miami bass, there's also a parallel with reggae-dancehall and soundsystem culture in jamaica, caribbe and north of South America. But in baile funk, it's producers who take a riddim to make a new version of the instrumental. After, each team will add their own MCs to the beat.

Une des nouvelles rythmiques sorties dernièrement c'est 'Aquecimento', qui veut dire réchauffement. J'aime bien le petit côté électro-funk du morceau.

Cumbia! : Nouvelle Cumbia - Ancienne Cumbia

La cumbia suscitte de plus en plus d'intérêt sur les internets ces temps-ci. Jean-Philippe nous en parlait il y a quelques semaines à CKUT et présentait quelques morceaux de la "nouvelle cumbia" qui nous arrive de Buenos Aires en Argentine principalement. En fait ce renouveau se fait autour d'un petit groupe de jeunes producteurs qui réinterprêtent leur background musical national et l'adaptent à leur goût, certains par des mash-up, d'autres par des remix electro ou dub. Parmi les têtes de files de cette nouvelle scène se trouve El Hijo De La Cumbia. Ingénieur du son et remixeur en chambre El Hijo est respecté pour sa technique et sa connaissance du genre. Il était présent dans le podcast de Diplo sur la cumbia (dommage que les artistes ne soit pas listés)

This is a serie of post about mostly baile funk new stuff, new riddims, funny sounds, cheesy "charme" and Bahia-african influence.

Cette série de posts baile funk est pour les amis qui veulent retrouver un peu de chaleur brésilienne en ces temps froids et gris de ce côté-ci des tropiques :) Il s'agit de nouveautés, de nouvelles ryhtmiques, de musique de charme et d'influences bahianaises-africaines.

Let's start with the Bahia or african ritual percussion influence on baile funk. The macumbinha I heard Sany Pitbull play at Cantagalo seems to get bigger and bigger on Rio baile producer. Sany is playing the instrumental a few times over the night, to talk over and also to create a kind of trance, like in candomble or macumba ceremony. And people do the chicken dance...

D'abord, commençons avec la partie la plus excitante, l'influence bahianaise sur les rythmes funk carioca. Je me rapelle lors de mon voyage à Rio l'été dernier, la première fois ou j'ai entendu de la "macumbinha", au baile de Cantagalo avec Sany Pitbull aux commandes. Cantagalo signifie "chante le coq", donc un endroit approprié pour le rituel de la danse du poulet. Ce fut très impressionnant de voir Sany utilisé la macumbinha à plusieurs reprises dans la soirée comme pour créer un effet de transe très apprécié par la foule. La liaison avec les cérémonies candomblé est évidente et ceci peut s'expliquer par le fait que la majorité des habitants de la favela sont originaires du nordeste ou de descendance africaine. Sany se sert aussi de la rythmique en instru pour parler par-dessus.

This track is very popular in Rio and Guillaume and I like it a lot. Very percussive and fun to mix with other brasilian riddim like batucada or maracatu :)
